INTACH Parichay

The Bangalore chapter of INTACH is organising a heritage walk at the Devanahalli Fort on Sunday, 20th Sep.

Date: Sun, 20th Sep, 8:30 AM
Place: Devanahalli Fort

Following is the official communication from INTACH:

Intach’s next Parichay will take place at Devanahalli fort on Sunday, 20 September, 2009. Devanahalli is famous for the airport, of course, but it is also where Hyder Ali began his military career and where Tipu Sultan was born. The fort here is interesting from the point of view of military architecture and also has some very interesting stories to tell.

We will meet at Devanahalli at 8:30 am on Sunday. As always, we will provide a light snack. We should wrap up in about three hours.

There will be a fee of Rs 100/- for this Parichay. Please register in advance with Meera (99860 23014) as seats are limited.

Cycling!
This place is about 40 KM from the city. Peevee and I are planning to cycle to this place! We haven’t done any long rides. So want to give this a try. This will be a stern 40+40 KM ride!

Bangalore Critical Mass – this saturday

Cycling Critical Mass is an informal event where cyclists meet up at a common point and ride on an agreed upon route as a group or critical mass and get noticed! In Bangalore this happens every last saturday of a month. The meeting point is Cubbon park.

I’m new to this. Will be trying this for the first time this saturday, 26th Jul. This will be a good way of forcing myself to put my bike on the road!

Here is a quote from the official site of Bangalore Critical Mass:

Critical Mass has been perceived as a psychological phenomena by many. It is a sociodynamic term to describe the existence of sufficient momentum in a social system such that the momentum becomes self-sustaining and fuels further growth. For example, consider a big city. If a person stops and looks up at the sky, nothing will happen. People nearby will go on about their business. However, if three people stop and look up at the sky, perhaps some people will momentarily turn around, but then continue on their way. In a Critical Mass only a small number of people is required to cause others to stop and analyze. This number is usually called the “critical mass” or tipping point.

Critical Mass in Cycling :
Critical Mass has been used as a weapon for bicycle advocacy and we have caught up to the idea. In the last few decades Bangalore has increasing become more negligent to bicycle commuters and pedestrians. Here the Critical Mass is targeted to educate motorist about the presence of cyclists on the road, raise issues that concern pedestrians and cyclists; and to demonstrate that cycling is a healthy possibility that every citizen in Bangalore should experience and benefit from.
